The world was taken aback on Friday by the incident of mass shootings that killed 49 people and wounded 48 others in New Zealand. It was also live-streamed via Facebook, shortly thereafter, the video spread online like wildfire, highlighting the incapability of social media sites to moderate content on their platform. One of those social media platforms scrambling to curb the proliferation of the footage is Reddit. The two subreddits were terminated for having violated the service's content policy , which clearly prohibits content that incites or glorifies violence, among others. However, it is worth pointing out that those subreddits - dedicated to gory content - existed long before the New Zealand shooting.

The popular news-sharing and discussion site bans transactions involving "illicit or strictly controlled" goods and services. Reddit removed several popular forums related to firearms on Wednesday as part of an update to the company's content policies that prohibit transactions involving some goods and services. The policy affected subreddits that discussed firearms, ammunition, explosives, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, stolen goods, personal information, paid services involving physical sexual contact and falsified documents. With the move, Reddit joins other high-profile companies that are responding to growing calls for gun control after a rash of mass shootings. Communities focused on such transactions and users who attempt to conduct them will be banned from the site. Tencent has regularly made deals alongside Sand Hill Road players. But this deal with the media-oriented Reddit has sparked protests of censorship from users who already recognize that many US social media sites are censored or blocked in China. It's interesting to see this deal getting an OK by US regulators particularly at this sensitive time in US-China trade and tech issues, when there is growing discussion over China's growing challenge to Silicon Valley. What attracted Tencent to Reddit was its strong base of gaming users. Games are a sandbox that Tencent typically plays in.
